Awake

Hello! It's been awhile since my last post, but things have been quite busy (in a good way!) Borrowed Light made it into the Animation Block Party in Brooklyn! It was also featured in vimeo, and many other sites and blogs, which has been awesome. Thank you everyone who watched it!

That said, I just wanted to post a little bit about my free current free time project currently titled Awake. It's something I'd been thinking about for awhile, and was I finally encouraged to really pursue it. Essentially it follows the idea of Briar Rose becoming a knight instead. Of all the princesses, she's probably the one who would've benefited most from some armor.

That's basically it! I've been exploring the idea in a couple directions (the comic being the lighter one). It's a fun mini-project. I hope I can make the time to keep up with it. I'm super grateful to everyone on tumblr who has sent me comments, compliments, critiques, references, ideas, and encouragement on it so far! Hopefully it lives up to the attention it's garnered.

Thesis Update

Hello! It's been awhile, but now that my thesis film is almost done I thought this blog could do with an update. First off, if anyone reading this will be in Baltimore this Sunday, please feel free to come behold the fruit of many near-death experiences! It's free! Lots of very cool work.

Things I have been doing this semester:
I made the posters, which just consist of all the fan art I've been doing for everyone's films. It was a nice break.


A finished scene! Although it's only a few seconds, this is probably one of my favorite parts. Juliana did the rough animation, and made it extra cute. I feel super lucky to have had someone I actually really admire helping me with the parts i'm not so good at. Most of my stars are done in After Effects, some are hand drawn.
And now i'll explain my process a little.
I'm a bit too impatient for roughs (though some people will probably say they're too impatient for coloring.) I prefer to work things out in the finish, which is why i'm extra lucky to have someone else helping me with it. I do my roughs in photoshop. No having linework to consider really helped.
All colored! I think everyone was worried about this scene because of the crowd, but broken down into groups it really wasn't too confusing.
The good thing about roughs is that you can try out ideas quickly. I actually didn't think I would do a rotation, but I did a quick test and it wound up making me really excited about the scene again. 


My set up. I use the pluggin anim dessin for PS CS6. I love it. Seriously. I'm not sure I could've finished without it. I think it holds up surprisingly well to other hand drawn animation programs.
I also got a sound designer this semester! A huge improvement. Admitting you're not the best person to be doing your sound is something that should happen way sooner than half-way through your project. Also, I was very lucky to have an old friend do the music, which makes it a bit more meaningful to me.
Juliaannnaa, you're the best! I'm indebted, but look forward to helping you with your thesis now.
These last two are prints I put together for the exhibition. I'm not sure why, but exhibitions seemed like the most stressful part of all. Maybe just because it was happening at the same time as the final files were due, but probably also because of costs, and the fact that everything needs to look nice and put together. I would suggest starting this way sooner, and thinking about it a little bit at a time. On the bright side I did learn how to cut mats and frame things!

All in all it was a great good learning experience. I'm actually pretty happy and relieved with the way things turned out. I think I actually draw a lot faster now, especially when I think back to how long some of my little 2d projects took me before. The thing I tell everyone is to just do something you enjoy (always. When you're burnt out change a scene enough to make it interesting again.) Know what you're not so good at so you can hopefully find someone you trust and appreciate as an artist to help you with it. Have a schedule, with dates, and not just a nebulos idea of when you think you can finish things. Hopefully this'll be useful to someone. Everyone gets through it in their own way, this is just what helped me survive.

Anyway, one last week and that will conclude my last days of school! Not sure I can believe it. Hope to see you at the festival!

The top is a crystallized version of my color script. (Spoilers.) But you can kind of see the mood i'm going for hopefully. I'm pretty happy with it, considering how nervous I used to be with color. 
The rest are concept sketches for the nature half of our 3D landscape class. I was too excited. I'm probably going with the either the half-overgrown church, or the park ave-mcmechen fence. I really like overgrown things, because I like environments more than characters. Replace all the people with treeees.
